The Profoto B10X Starter Kit contains everything that a wedding and portrait photographer needs to get started with light. It's the perfect kit to bring on location as well as use in your studio. A great introduction to Profoto's world of light shaping.

The B10X's are both multipurpose. Which means whether you are shooting video or still, the B10X can take it in their stride. Compared to the B10's, both B10X models have an increased maximum continuous light output by 30% up to 3250 lumens. Both models also feature faster recycling speed compared to its predecessors.

B10X is both extremely easy to use straight from the box with their clean and user-friendly interfaces. Meaning all focus can be dedicated towards creating images rather than fiddling with settings. And the Profoto app makes easy to view and control all light settings from the palm of your hand and install new updates in seconds.

Both lights also include Profoto’s Bluetooth enabled technology AirX. So, you can unleash the full power of the B10X also when shooting with your smartphone Enabling you to capture, edit and publish with the same (camera) device and thereby dramatically reduce the time from creative concept to published image.
An extensive range of light shaping possibilities are also available through the lightweight and easy to use OCF-modifier family and 120 other light shaping tools in the Profoto range.

Light Shaping Tool Compatibility

The Profoto B10X is compatible with all 100 mm Profoto light shapers, including the lightweight and portable OCF light shapers and the larger and heavier light shaping tools such as the RFi 4x6’ softbox. The B10X is a flat-fronted light meaning that light shapers designed to be optimised for protruded heads are not recommended.

What’s the key differences between the Profoto B10X and B10X Plus?

The B10X Plus delivers 500Ws compared to the B10X's 250Ws, effectively giving you one extra stop of light with the B10X Plus. This extra power is particularly valuable when trying to overpower sunlight or using large modifiers that eat up light.

However, the B10X is a slightly more compact light and weight - approximately 400grams lighter than the B10X Plus. This is worth considering if space in your kit bag is at a premium.

Can I use these lights for both stills photography and video work effectively?

Yes - both the B10X and B10X Plus feature a 3200-lumen LED modelling light that doubles as a continuous light source for video. The light maintains consistent coluor temperature (adjustable between 3000-6500K) and can be dimmed from 100% to 0%. The CRI/TLCI ratings exceed 96, making them suitable for professional video work as well as tills photography.

How long does the battery last when out on a shoot?

Both uthe Profoto B10X and B10X Plus use the same battery type. The B10X delivers approximately 400 flashes at full power (250Ws) per charge; and the B10X Plus delivers approximately 200 flashes at full power (500Ws) per charge.

However, in real-world use at typical power settings (around half to a quarter power), you can expect 400-600 flashes. Although, if you have are using the LED modelling light running continuously you will significantly reduce the number of shots you can take.

With both the B10X and B10X Plus in continuous mode with the LED modelling light running you will get about 75 minutes of continuous modelling light use at full power - 3200 lumins.

How well does this light handle location shoots and travel between locations?

Both the B10X and B10X Plus are remarkably portable, weighing about 1.5kg for the B10X and 1.9kg for the B10X Plus with battery and stand adapter. They're about the size of a 70-200mm lens and can fit in most camera bags. The B10X is longer than the B10X by approximately 6am. They include a padded case for protection and can operate on battery or AC power. While they're not fully weathersealled, they're built to handle professional use in various conditions.

Which light shaping tools are compatibale with the B10X and B10X Plus?

Both the B10X and B10X Plus flashes are flat fronted and have a diameter of 100mm. The Profoto OCF range are the ideal light shaping ecosystem for these lights because they are lightweight, compact, quick to set up and easy to use. You can use the RFi light shaping tools and the new quick set-up softboxes as well the ever popular Profoto umbrellas. The B10X and B10X Plus are also compatible with the Profoto Zoom Refelctors.
